The 13th hole at Ballinrobe Golf Course, County Mayo Golf

There are several excellent golf courses within a 30 minute drive, including Tuam, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Galway City, Athenry and Galway Bay.

A little further away is Ballyconnelly Golf Course in Clifden. Situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in a spectacular setting, this championship course is a challenge as good as any golfer would wish for.  Westport Golf Club is recognised as a prestigious venue and has hosted the 2002 Smurfit Irish P.G.A championship.

Fishing
The fishing in the area is second to none in the world. The season extends from 15 February to 30 September (the dapping season from mid may to mid June), using mayfly and from mid July to mid September using 'hopper' or 'daddy'. There are many local gillies (fishing guides) available locally.
Fishing on Lough Corrib
A salmon licence may be purchased in the local villages.

Lough Corrib
Lough Corrib is 42,000 acres in size and stretches in length from within 4 miles of Galway City to within 2 miles of Maam Bridge, a distance of 33 miles. The Lough is renowned for its wild brown trout and salmon fishing. Brown trout fishing is usually good from the first day of the season and the salmon fishing for grilse is best from around the end of May. Trout can be caught on wet fly from opening day, Feb. 15th. Each season, a number of specimen brown trout are caught on the lough, and the record stands at around 21.5lb, caught in September 2002. There are boats for hire at several locations around the lough, and boatmen are also available at most boat stations. Angling on Lough Corrib is free.

Lough Mask
A Limestone lake of 22,000 acres connected by an underground channel with Lough Corrib, holding large ferox trout, pike, eels, perch and a few char. Angling is free. Trout up to 15lb are taken by trolling and on dap. Mayfly are best from mid-May to mid-June; daddy-long legs and grasshoppers are most common from late June to September; and wet fly between March and April and July and September. Dry fly fishing can be successful from May to September.

Connemara
Enjoy a drive through Connemara. This is the Gaeltacht region, to the West of Galway city. Stone walls trail along the landscape, interspersed with cottages and modern Lodges, and stacks of peat that are harvested from the local bogs to heat the homes.

Horse Riding
At the world famous Ashford equestrian centre which can cover over 3000 acres of the former estate of Ashford Castle which was once the home of the Guinness family. Lord Ardilaun built tunnels under the roads to avoid the inconvenience of opening gates, a gesture which is very much appreciated.

Cruising & Boating
Corrib Cruises have 2 daily sailings which depart from Ashford Castle in Cong. Visit the 5th Century monastic site on Inchagoill Island & enjoy the live music session on the traditional Irish cruise which sails every evening at 6.00pm.

Horse Racing
The nearby Ballinrobe Race Course is recognised as one of the premier racing venues and relative to its size, returns some of the best racing returns in the country. Many new improvements, particularly in the provision of a new stand, has consolidated this picturesque course as one of one of the best attended race meetings in the calendar. Six to seven meetings are held annually.
